Posted November 20, 2018 12:59:51EUGENE, Australia — Eugene textile centre will offer free classes to low income women to help them make a better living, the centre’s founder Josephine Coyle said.
“I’m not sure how it’s possible, but for me personally it’s a good thing,” she said.
“This is about helping people get to where they need to be.”
She said she would like to see more women in high-paying industries such as engineering, law, education and hospitality and help them understand the differences in their lives and careers.
“They’ve got to be educated to understand the value of being an entrepreneur and their career options,” Ms Coyle said.
The Eugene centre is the first in Australia and is run by the Eugene-based Eugene Institute of Technology which aims to create a new “economic engine” in Australia.
It’s funded by the Government’s $20 billion Women, Infants and Children Fund, the Victorian Government and the Federal Government.
The centre opened in August 2017 in the suburb of Wollongong, which has a population of about 7,500.
“We know the women who are working here and their lives are so different,” Ms Mather said.”[We want to] give them the knowledge to start their own businesses.”
She has been working at the Eugene institute for about five years and is the youngest member of the centre staff.
Ms Coyle is working to expand the organisation’s services and make it more inclusive for women, young people and families.
“What we’re trying to do is really open up to the whole community to do things and to create opportunities for people to contribute to the community,” she said.
“We have to be realistic about our community because it’s really tough for people in that community.”
The Eugene Institute has been offering free classes for women since it was established in 2012, but it has also had to face criticism from some residents and some community members.
In May this year, the Eugene woman who lives in the town of Woomera was fined $400 by the council after the centre told her it was illegal to offer a sewing class.
“It’s a small business and the women have to live in a very expensive area so the costs to provide them with this is not very low,” Ms Woomer said.
Ms Mather is also working with the Women’s Business Council of Australia to launch an online course to help women in Woomerrab.
“The course is designed to empower women in the workplace to get on top of their career goals, and be able to get their careers back on track,” Ms Mather said .
“It also looks at the skills and knowledge they’ll need to get them on their path to becoming an entrepreneur.”
She wants to ensure that the women attending the online course will be supported by a mentor, as well as a mentor who can teach them about their options and help them take the next step.
“One of the things we are trying to work on is to get the women in our community to really understand the difference in their career choices,” she added.
