A new book on the history and legacy of the cloth industry focuses on the origins of the industry, its history, its future and how it’s changing.
The book, “The History of Textile Industry: A New History of the Textile Sector,” comes out Tuesday by the Center for the History of Science, Technology and Industry at the University of Pennsylvania.
The book will be published in the U.S. and Canada by the University Press of America.
In the book, researchers examine the role of the European textile industry from the 1600s to the early 20th century, focusing on how the industrial revolution changed the way the textile world worked and how people perceived the textile sector.
“In many ways, we’re talking about the very first wave of globalization,” said Peter M. Hargrove, a professor of history and co-author of the book.
“We have an industrial revolution and the textile revolution, and in a sense we’ve gone back to a world where the textile industries had no market.
The industry is still a global one.
It’s just that the markets have changed.
There are a lot of changes happening in the textile markets.”
Hargroves book is titled, The History of a New Industrial Revolution.
In the book he uses the word “industrial” in its broadest sense, which encompasses the process of making and using products and technologies.
The word “modern” comes from the Industrial Revolution, a time when the world was changing.
Hargryve said the textile and textile industry had an impact on how we think about and understand technology.
“It’s not just the textile, the textile is just a component of the industrial process,” Hargryves said.
“Technology was a major factor in this transition and the industrialization of the world.
It also played a major role in the transition from a nomadic economy to an industrial economy, which was very different than the previous nomadic, agricultural economy.”
Haggar is the co-founder of the International Textile Workers’ Federation (ITWF).
She says the textile workers were often overlooked because they weren’t as visible.
“When the textile worker was invisible it meant that we were making products that weren’t made in the world’s largest factory,” she said.
Haggers book explores how the textile manufacturers were viewed as outsiders.
The textile industry didn’t exist until the late 1800s, so the textile factory was seen as a second-class institution.
“The textile workers had the same status as the blacksmith, the machinist and the tailor,” Haggar said.
“There was a very large disparity in the treatment of the workers in the cotton industry and the cotton factory.
They weren’t viewed as employees.
They were considered as a commodity.
They could be replaced, replaced, replace them.
They didn’t earn their pay, they didn’t receive a pension, they couldn’t be replaced by a new worker.”
Hags book points to the history as a window on the way we see and think about technology.
It shows how we have come to understand and relate to technology in a way that we weren’t aware of at the time.
“What we’re seeing now is the way that technology is changing and we’re realizing how different we are to how we were in the past,” Haggers said.
