Digital printing technology will be added as an alternative to passport photo stamps in 2020, with the US National Archives and Records Administration saying the change will be “transformative” for American citizens.
Digital printing, which uses digital photos and images to create images and documents, is already widely used in countries such as the UK and Germany, with other countries including Japan and China also considering similar policies.
But the new Digital Print passport would be the first time it will be offered in the US, where passport holders are not allowed to own any tangible property.
It would be a departure from previous rules that prohibited digital printing on passports, but the move would not be considered a change in policy.US President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference at the White House in Washington, DC, US on December 7, 2018.

The US government has previously said it is considering allowing digital printing of passport images, but has said it does not intend to do so.US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, pictured at the 2017 US-Japan Summit, said the US government was considering the introduction of digital prints for passport images.
The National Archives said in a statement that the digital passport would allow US passport holders to digitally print the picture or document without the need to have physical stamps.
“Digital printing has the potential to dramatically improve the quality and reliability of the U.S. passport, with more than one billion digital images now being created daily,” it said.
“It would enable people to digitally sign, print, and scan their documents without the physical presence of a stamp.”
Digital prints would allow people to sign their documents, create images with no physical presence, and print on a computer.
But passport photos, which are issued by the US Passport Office, are considered official documents by the U-S Congress.
The new passport would also allow people with a physical passport to print documents using digital printing technology, such as a QR code.
The QR code would then be scanned and then printed on the printed document and then attached to a passport stamp.
K, Germany and Japan already allow passport photos to be printed digitally on the ground and in a digital format.
But digital printing is also considered problematic for certain individuals who have physical passports.
Digital prints could also be used in areas where the digital stamp is impractical.
For example, when the United States Department of Homeland Security considers the use of digital stamps for travel, it will consider how the stamps could be printed on a stamp of the same design, but printed digitally.
“In addition to enhancing security and making it easier to get the documents, digital prints can be used for more mundane purposes such as adding information to the document or creating a QR-code for use with online banking, as well as providing an easy way for the holder to log on to the US Government Web site,” the National Archives statement said.
