KENYA, Kenya — Kenya coach Joseph Kiyatonga is looking to give his players a little bit of the freedom they need to do their thing at the upcoming World Cup in 2018.
“There are some things I would like to do to get the players going that we are trying to implement, but I don’t want to get them too excited,” Kiyakawa said during a press conference in the national team’s training camp at the Knoll Stadium.
“Some players want to do it too much, they want to just do it, they are just not motivated,” he said, adding that he wanted his players to get more rest.
Kiyakaya said he had also asked players to be more creative and not take things for granted.
“For instance, in the [Africa Cup of Nations] we had two goals [and] it’s just the nature of the game.
We want to play the game, we want to create chances, but we also want to be as efficient as possible,” he added.”
We have a lot of young players that we want them to have some experience and also some experience on the training field, so we need to give them a bit of freedom.”
With a World Cup coming up, Kiyata has also been looking to find ways to give the players more freedom.
“If we want the players to take a risk in the way that we have them, they have to be able to give it,” he explained.
“It’s not just to give a penalty and a goal, but to give that freedom to the players.”
Kiyatawa also revealed that there were some players who were not getting the freedom he wanted, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
“The first goal we conceded at the [South Africa] match was because they were not able to control the ball and get a result,” he told reporters.
“That was an important point for us to change the mindset of our players, because they need the freedom to have the confidence that they can score the second goal.”
With the Kenya team in town for their training camp and the tournament in the back of their minds, Kibwo Konye and Kiyatta Kankreja were among the players who had their sights set on scoring two goals in their next two matches against France and Colombia.
Konye said he was not sure if the goal would be a success.
“I don’t know if we will be able, but maybe we can score a goal,” he admitted.
“Defensively, we need a bit more freedom, because the team needs that freedom, but on the offensive side, we are not doing too well,” Kankreyasaid.
Kankreya was also not sure whether the goal was possible.
“When we started scoring in our last game, that was the last time we scored, so maybe it’s not going to happen, but the goal will be possible,” the centre-back told reporters after the match.
“But we need some luck.”
Kankrejasaid that he was confident that the two players would score.
“They are not too bad, they just need to make a few more passes, they need a few minutes to work,” he continued.
“Our team is good, they will do well, so hopefully we can make them score.”
Despite the team’s recent form, Konya said he felt it was still early days for the team, with only a few games left.
“Of course we have our work to do,” Kony said.
“And if we keep winning, we will definitely win, but it’s a different situation, a different challenge for us.”
